Apply for British citizenship by naturalisation
Use this form to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation. You cannot apply online if you live in the Channel Islands, on the Isle of Man or in a British Overseas Territory. You should apply using the Channel Islands, Isle of Man, British Overseas Territory form.
In your application, you can also include family members. Each person included in the application will be assessed against the statutory requirements in their own right.
You can also apply on behalf of a child under 18 if they meet the eligibility criteria. Read more about citizenship for children under 18 in Guide MN1.
Before you apply
Before you begin your application, ensure you can provide the following:
- a ‘Life in the UK Test’ certificate: this must be from the official government service for Life in the UK Tests and you will need to provide your pass reference number (If you are applying on behalf of a child under 18, they don’t have to pass the Life in the UK Test)
- two referees
- proof of your knowledge of the English language
If you already have a certificate for knowledge of the English language to at least B1 level, used as part of a successful settlement application, you can use this towards this application.
You also need to provide one of the following:
- evidence of Indefinite Leave to Remain
- a certificate of entitlement to the right to abode
- evidence of settled status (also known as ‘indefinite leave to remain under the EU Settlement Scheme’)

Any reference in this form to EEA nationals includes Swiss nationals.
How long it takes you to complete the application will depend on your situation. You will be able to save your application and come back to it at another time if you need to.
If you are inactive for 25 minutes you will be automatically logged out.
